Grand-Final Match Report-

Eastern came into the final after chasing down 137 by Diamond Valley.  Eastern had the second highest runs in the competition, but their lower order batters had barely faced a ball,

while the ECA bowling was ranked 11th, giving up some big scores.  They had plenty of experience with 3 MShld and 4 JBPlate players from last season

SECA had survived a near-death experience in a tense semi-final against Dandenong, but our players held their nerve to just hold off a gallant run chase.

ECA won the toss......and elected to bowl !   Benji Franchina came out with all guns blazing, hitting a high full-toss over fine leg for a huge six, and blasting 3 other boundaries on a slowish surface.

We lost Finn McKean (12) in the 5th over, but we raced to 1/54 at the 10 over drinks break.  The Franchina show (37 off 38 balls) came to an end when he was caught at deep midwicket,

and Neal Guliya (15) missed a straight one to have SECA 3/77.  Runs continued to flow, but Aarav Vinothkumar (14) was unfortunately runout in a mix up, and Pat Hardiman (4) was unlucky

to get the ball of the day which hit the stumps.  Suddenly SECA were 5/125 in the 25th over.   Both our semi-final heroes were out, were ECA going to claw their way back into the game?

At this critical juncture Charlie Damiano was 28 and playing a cool calculated innings, and Harry Shaw and Max Lancaster kept him company until Charlie retired for a masterful 51no off 60 balls,

six 4s and a glorious 6 off their spinner.  SECA 6/155 after 33 overs.  SECA needed someone to "ice the cake", and Leo Wintle obliged with a sparkling 28no, including 4 powerful boundaries,

and in support Lenny Irish rattled up a nice 9 no off 11 balls.  ECA added to their woes by bowling 18 extras, and at the end of 40 overs SECA had made 7/205 (19 x 4, 2 x 6).

Eastern started their enormous run chase cautiously, facing accurate bowling and some excellent ground fielding.  At 3/34 off 15 overs ECA needed 6.88 runs per over and it only got worse from there.

Lenny Irish (1/8), Sammy Kavanagh (1/9) and Pat Hardiman (1/12)  did the early damage.  ECA star Om Joshi (30) had fought on gamely but when Max Lancaster (1/17) picked up his wicket, ECA were 5/77.

A couple of kids showed some fight to get ECA to 7/105, but when Charlie Calman (1/12) struck to break this stand, the last 2 went quickly as we wrapped up the innings for 116 in 33.2 overs,

Harry Shaw taking 2/3 with his offies.  Lachlan Lee was superb in the field with 3 catches, and also bowled 4 tidy overs of off-spin.

The bowling was relentless all day, with only 8 boundaries and  7 extras conceded.

What a fine team performance, literally every single player contributed with runs, wickets or catches in our huge win

It was a clinical performance by a SECA side that ranks alongside our other great power sides of 1994, 2006, 2012, 2013, and 2015, which all went through unbeaten

From 1993-94 onwards, SECA has won the Mitchell Shield 16 times, going through unbeaten on 14 occasions, and have been runners-up 8 times.

A superb coaching performance by Jacob Curry and Josh Finkelstein.

They made it fun for the boys, showed faith in individuals so they all felt valued, while keeping it professional, holding players to high standards.

Our thanks also team-manager Michelle Damiano ensured everything off-field ran like clockwork.
